James Arthur Baldwin was a Black American author, activist, playwright, and essayist who played a significant role in the civil rights movement. Baldwin was one of the first people to explore the intersections of sexuality, race, and class in his works of fiction, such as Giovanni’s Room and Another Country. These books are some of the first pieces of literature to unabashedly examine same-sex relationships.
